A Flexible and Cost-Effective Low and Mid-Pressure Solution
Oil-flooded rotary screw compressors provide a wide operating range in a cost-effective solution for applications with discharge pressures ranging up to 400 psig (2,758 kPag). From a flexibility standpoint, we combine speed controls, slide valve, and bypass valves in order to achieve 100% turndown. This incredible degree of flexibility makes the rotary screw an ideal fit for the fluctuating demand of refrigeration compression, among other applications. The screw compressor features only two significant moving parts, and the oil-flooded nature of the machine absorbs the heat of compression, allowing it to operate at higher compression ratios than other types of compressors. The result is an inherently lower cost of maintenance, and a unit capable of as many as 20 compression ratios.
Understanding the Fundamentals
The primary risk associated with screw compressors is a product of the lubrication oil being in contact with the process gas, especially in applications operating near vapor dewpoints. The oil-flooded housing transfers heat of compression away from the process gas, which can cause liquid to condense inside the compression chamber. Controlling the lube oil temperature and throttling the volume injected are necessary steps to avoid critical failure, but are easily managed.
